DANA GUEST HOUSE: DESCRIPTION

Perched on the edge of Wadi Dana, the Guest House offers a breathtaking view of the reserve. It contains nine comfortably furnished bedrooms with private terraces, and good facilities for meetings and conferences.

Visitors will find a range of services available at the reserve, including a Guest House at the Dana Village, interpretation information at the Tower Entrance, a campsite at Rummana and Feinan areas, an assortment of hiking trails, a Nature Shop, and a Visitor's Center at the Dana Village. Rangers offer a variety of guided hikes to key locations in the reserve.

Dana Nature Reserve (308 square km) is a world of natural treasures. It is composed of a chain of valleys and mountains which extend from the top of the Jordan Rift Valley down to the desert lowlands of Wadi Araba. The visitor to this area will be awed by the beauty of the Rummana mountain, the mystery of the ancient archaeological ruins of Feinan, the timeless serenity of Dana Village, and the grandeur of the red and white sandstone cliffs of Wadi Dana.

People with Charm & History:

The Dana Village area, which overlooks the scenic Wadi Dana, has witnessed human settlement since about 4000 BC. Evidence unveiled by archaeological exploration shows that Paleolithic, Egyptian, Nabataean and Roman civilizations were drawn to the area by the fertility of the soil, the water springs and the strategic location.

The people who inhabit Dana Village today are the "Al Ata'ata" tribe. They settled and built the village during Ottoman times about 400 years ago.

Dana has one of the most beautiful and unspoiled mountain landscapes in  Jordan and a spectacular village, perched on the edge of a deep and precipitous gorge, reminiscent of the Grand Canyon. It is rich in wildlife, and one of the best places to watch birds, especially during spring and autumn migrations.

The total number of species recorded so far consists of 697 plants, of which 3 are new to science, and 282 animals. Many of these are now very rare and some threatened with extinction: animals like the Grey Wolf, Nubian Ibex, the Lesser Kestrel, Eagle Owl and the Desert Monitor Lizard.

So far, 45 endangered or vulnerable animals have been found in the reserve, making it truly a place of world importance.

Dana is rich in archaeology and culture. About 100 archaeological sites have been identified, of which the ancient copper mines  Wadi Feinan are particularly special, being considered the most important archaeological complex in southern Jordan outside of Petra.

There is a wide variety of hiking trails, from short 1 hour circuits to day-hikes, requiring an over night in camps. All trails offer spectacular views of rock formations, and some pass important archaeological sites, including the ancient copper mining centre of Feinan.
